Relationships With France
France main political and military power in Europe in second half of 15th century
Long disputes between France and Aragon over two of Catalonia's northern provinces, Cerdagne and Roussillon which had been occupied by France since 1462- one of Ferdinand's main aims was to secure these areas and create a buffer zone North of the Pyrenees to protect Aragon from invasion
Early 1490's- France attention towards Italy and wanting to make sure their frontiers were secure, the French were willing to give up both Cerdagne and Roussillon by the Treaty of Barcelona (1493)

1494- French invasion of Italy
1495- French occupy Naples ruled by Ferdinand's illegitimate cousin King Ferrante
1495- Ferdinand joined a Holy League with HRE, the papacy and a number of Italian states against the French
1495-97- Gonzalo de Cordoba commanded Spanish troops in Italy
1500- France & Spain signed Treaty of Granada, agreeing to split Naples between them when it was conquered
Phase 2
1501- Cordoba returned to Naples- disputes over who got what after victory
1503- Victories over French at Cerignola and Garigliano
1504- France recognised Spanish control over Naples in Treaty of Lyron and it became part of crown of Aragon
Phase 3
1508- Lord of Cambrai formed which included France, the Papacy, Spain, the Duchy of Ferrara and the HRE against republic of Venice which was expanding its territory
1510- France changed sides joining Venetians because they didn't trust the Pope
1511- Holy League against the French- included Spain, England and HRE
1512- Defeat of Spanish army at Ravenna
1513- Pope died
1515- Louie XII of France died and New King of France Francis I defeated League of Cambrai at Marignano

Naples valuable acquisition for Spain
Important geographically- central area of the Mediterranean
Grain supplies considerable asset as was its revenue
Naples made Spain most important influence in Italy and gave it control of Southern Europe by land and sea
Naples brought further foriegn policy commitments
Spain's toehold in Italy through Naples was to lead to further military and diplomatic warfare against Spain
Extended length of Spanish frontier in the Mediterranean which would need to be defended against Turks
