Springshare E-Reserves (Pros (Can post e-reserve items as file…
Springshare
E-Reserves
Pros
Can be integrated/linked to class/subject specific LibGuides
Can post e-reserve items as file attachments or links
Default 5GB storage space with possibility of increasing
All past/current reserved PDFs on e-reserves drive add up to 8.29GB
Includes PDFs used long ago, by former faculty, etc
5GB should be plenty of space
Can delete reserve items/files not used for 2(?)+ years to help free up space
Can keep using Bitly to organize files linked from OneDrive or catalog/databases
Students won't have to sign into Microsoft 365 to view reserves hosted on Springshare
Can password-protect at course level and/or item level
Not as important if not hosting digitized videos but still useful
Comes with integrated reserve request form
Not sure how customizable
Can faculty get a copy of their request?
Add checkboxes?
library owns item
purchase request
personal copy
Can Springshare request form be turned off/hidden?
Integration is great but there are some features of the form that could be confusing to faculty
Form only lets you request one item at a time?
Can be integrated into Canvas course pages
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can organize items into folders
Weekly assigned readings or supplemental readings on a single topic
Can add copyright status and custom copyright statement
Haven't played with this much but looks promising/useful
Cons
Only supports
e-reserves, not physical reserves
Can add physical reserves as links to the item record in the catalog
Will allow students to see
all items on physical reserve
item availability
item loan period
Hard to distinguish between physical and e-books
All item titles can begin with
Physical: BOOK: / DVD:
E-reserves: eBOOK: / PDF: / VIDEO:
Identifies/differentiates between physical and e-reserves
Physical reserves together at the top, e-reserves together at the bottom
Physical items can include the note "Available for checkout at the Circulation Desk"
No easy way for faculty to specify physical book/e-book in integrated request form
Can maybe add/change item types with paid membership?
Request form doesn't have options for reserve types (loan periods)
Request form might be customizable or able to be turned off/hidden
Ideas
Discontinue "rush" service
All reserves are posted quickly unless I am waiting for an item to be ordered/returned
Notice that reserves are posted
Sunday-Thursday?
Stipulate that streaming videos may take up to 7(?) days to be available to students
Unsure what turnaround time will be
Approve purchase of film
Contact vendor to purchase film
Vendor supplies film
Film gets posted to reserves
Limit 5 purchased (Kanopy/Swank) films per class
Departmental/faculty-level budget?
Priority given to videos we don't own on DVD or through another database?
Purchased films MUST be required viewing for entire class
Happy Beth
Integrated statistics function exports class/semester stats into PDF or Excel format
Don't have to comb through Bitly to count clicks
Can fully turn off visibility to classes not in session
In WMS, all classes are deleted at the end of each semester and created from scratch the following semester so classes not in session are not visible/mistaken for being in session
Reserve items stay in Springshare
Can be posted to another class or saved for another semester
