Surface of virion is coated with haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N) - these are required for attachment to the host respiratory epithelium

Antivirals only in high risk patients e.g. chronic disease, immunosuppressed, pregnant, extremes of age

Symptomatic treatment: paracetamol, bed rest, fluids
Annual influenza vaccine for elderly, children and healthcare workers
