Sociocultural Factors
Family: Your must intimate relationship and have large influence towards your health and protective and risk behavior choices
Peers: Creating environments where you seek to fit into the group by adapting their risk/ protective behaviors
Media: Plays a large role in shaping our health through subtle phrases and images that promote a particular aspect
Religion: This can often be in a positive manner as it provides a purpose for life and promotes self-worth. Yet it can also be perceived as limiting and have negative effects
Culture: Traditions, values and a number of other behaviors, including traditional food or social activities that individual may participate in have a positive influence
Individual Factors
Knowledge: In order to improve their health an individual needs to have good health knowledge such as where to find such information
Genetics: Refers to the genes you inherit from your parents. These genes can pre-dispose you to particular diseases or health issues.
Attitudes: Individual’s attitude can have either a positive or negative affect on their health. Achieving good health requires resilience, perseverance, self-belief and determination. People who value health are likely to achieve better health than those who don't
Skills: Critical, practical and research skills can help and individual achieve good levels of health
Environmental factors
Geographical Location: Can mean that they are exposed to pollution, or have limited access to fresh water, foods purchased have had to travel further and have less nutrients
Access to Health Services: Depending on cost and physical access, will limit/ broaden opportunity and availability of health services
Access to Technology: Includes health care and knowledge. Effected by geographical location and socioeconomic factors
Socioeconomic Factors
Employment: Particular occupation has a large impact on health. e.g people with physically active jobs are likely to complete recommended 30min activity a day
Education: Impact your employment and your health. Health education refers to your knowledge on diet, exercise how the 5 dimensions interact etc.
Income: People with higher/lower levels can/cannot afford many health services that are/aren't completely covered by Medicare. Reliance on public health-care system means limited choice in doctors and hospitals/ facilities
