POLYMERS
-
What is it?
- Set of molecules attached together in long chains
- Formed by monomers (more than 1)
- The atom chain creates a backbone, so other atoms can join it
-
Examples and uses
- Cellulose. It is processed to produce papers and fibres, plastics and photographic films
- Plastics. One example is: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), used for furniture, clothing, medical containers, water and sewage pipes, flooring, vinyl records, cables, cleaning solution containers, water bottles.
- Rubbers. Used in tires of automotive vehicles, aircraft, and bicycles; as well as, shoes, helmets and some clothes
- Resins. Used for balsams (healing agent), thermoplastic resins (remain plastic after heat), soapmaking, copals, used in varnishes and amber fabricated into jewelry
Synthesis process
Many addition polymers are produced by using organometallic compound, the Ziegler-Natta catalyst (titanium compounds with an aluminium trialkyl). Others are produced by generating free radicals with an initiator to catalyse it.
Many condensation polymerization reactions, are formed by one or two monomers that also need catalysts
The formulation of plastic is made by using many additives that can result either in rigid or flexible plastics.
