Building evaluative judgement through the process of feedback
Feedback - "process whereby learners obtain information about their work in order to appreciate the similarities and differences between the appropriate standards for any given work, and the qualities of the work, in order to generate improved work"
Both explicit (in the form of standards, protocols and rubrics) and implicit knowledge "required to enable learners to distinguish what good work looks like in a particular context"
In healthcare, feedback has been observed to be a one-way street
We don't pay attention to learners' self assessment as a general rule
We don't judge ourselves accurately - we are either too harsh (if high-performing) and too lenient (if underperforming)
Like any skill, practice makes perfect
Emerging literature: Verbal feedback can assist development of own judgement
Can audiovisual self-feedback to the same or better
Supervisors generally offered little opportunity for self-reflection, and the self-reflection was often superficial
Educators have no problem reinforcing positive self-assessment, but struggle to deliver the corrective assessment
What effect will video feedback have on this?
Depth of self-evaluation matches depth of enquiry
Lack of candour from the trainee
avoiding externalising own thoughts and becoming vulnerable
avoiding detection of previously unseen shortcomings
repeating/reflecting signature pedagogy/hidden curriculum of supervisor
