Ex-Slaves Position after the Civil War
Foward Progress
Amendments
The 13th Amendment
Abolished Slavery once and for all.
All forms of slavery illegal in the U.S.
The 14th Amendment
Granted citizenship for all Naturalized people in the U.S.
In turn giving equal protection to all people in the U.S.
Gave citizenship to majority of former slaves.
The 15th Amendment
Gave all citizens regardless of color right to vote.
Gave African American men right to vote.
This gave them the power to help control government
Share Cropping
Owned land
Slaves were able to have land which gave them safety and security.
With safety and security the families flourished in communities in the south developing culture.
Helped African American communities grow and flourish in the south.
Cheap housing
Gave them security and ability to find work.
Finding work helped them climb the social ladder.
Gave more money for them to be able to fill other necessities like feeding family.
Freedmen's Bureau
Education
Educating African American's gave them more importance in society.
Helped them earn Jobs.
Further helped equality in the south.
Housing
Helped house families and kept them safe.
Took stresses of finding shelter off of the newly freed slaves.
Food
This kept the families safe and alive
helped give security and pushed to find jobs and equality.
Backward steps
Black codes
Took away rights and impeded equality.
This un-did many of the constitutional rights African Americans had.
Did all they could to stop any reconstruction
Forced the African Americans back onto crops.
Put them in horrible working conditions and put them back where they started before the civil war.
African American's punished for not following "laws".
Since they followed these rules they infected society and got normal again.
Paramilitary Groups and Cults
Ku Klux Klan
Induced fear in the south for all African Americans.
Killed many people.
Impeded Northern help by threatening to hurt and kill families
The Redeemers
They took apart Republicans in the south.
Impeded African American Constitutional rights by making local laws.
Took control of the South from inside the government.
Introduced systemic racism.
Kept African American's under their thumb.
