Principles of Feminism
Sex and Gender
"Sex" reflects biological differences between men and women whereas "gender" refers to cultural and social distinctions.
Sex remains the same regardless of time and culture, Gender differs across time and culture
Against the idea of Man - Primary Role, Wife supporting role
Patriarchy
Believe that society is run by men for men and that women are suppressed by the patriarchy through, the state, household culture, sexuality paid work, violence.
Personal is political
Feminists challenge the idea that what goes on between men and women in the private sphere has nothing to do with the rest of society. These issues include: household division of labour, attitude towards women who want to work and objectification.
Intersectionality
Equality Feminism
Men and Women are the same, no such thing as male and female characteristics, character differences are a result of nurture not nature.
Difference Feminism
Men and Women are fundamentally different, Women approach things differently to Men, Women should explore themsvles and not suppress themselves.
Society
Refers to the way feminism has evolved in society. Traditional feminism has ignored the role of all but white, middle-class women in society and framed feminism in a way that is only for these types of women.
Economy
Feminism must embrace the position of women in developing-world economies, which is much worse than women in the West.
