Kostylo
Perennialism
"Progressivism evolved under the influence of four factors: the industrial revolution, modern science, the development of democracy and the favourable cultural enviroment in the United States" (Kostylo, 2014, p.27).
Essentialism
“The essence of essentialism is to strive to maintain the legacy of past cultural patterns. According to essentialism, these patterns are not only real, but also good. It follows that the main goal of education should be their transmission.” (Kostylo, 2014, p. 25)
“The essentialists’ deep belief in democracy is an interesting point worth emphasizing here. Unlike perennialism, essentialism is open to the idea of democracy. However, the adopted assumptions of this model make the understanding of democracy inflexible and closed.” (Kostylo, 2014, p. 26)
Progressivism
“Progressivism evolved under the influence of four factors; the industrial revolution, modern science, the development of democracy and the favorable cultural environment in the United States.” (Kostylo, 2014, p. 27)
“Progressivists understand it positively as an opportunity of individuals living next to one another to take full advantage of their capabilities for the sake of self-development and the development of the community.” (Kostylo, 2014, p. 27)
Social Reconstructionism
"According to reconstructionist, being too heavily burdened with transmission, and too prone to adaption, education loses sight of the most pressing social problems" (Kostylo, 2014, p.28).
Adler
Two Essays on Docility
Docility and Authority
Docility means to respect teachers and be open to learning. One problem with this is that people mistake for being subservient, which means to obey a master.
Think about what you are choosing to judge before you decide to judge it. Decide if it is emotional or intellectual and then decide if you should disagree or not disagree
Docility and History
“The attainment of docility is, as we have seen, a personal problem which each of us must solve in his private life of learning. But there is also an institutional problem of docility, involving the curriculum and administration of studies in an educational system.” (Adler, 1989, p. 29)
Students are responsible for the way that they learn and should look back at how things were in the past in order to decide how they should be in the current.
“This historical sense is not simply a sense of the past. It is even more a sense of the future, and an awareness of the present as a point in motion between past and future.” (Adler, 1989, p. 33)
"The need for docility arises from the supposition that a student lacks knowledge or the skill to get it and that a teacher, having what the student lacks, can help him" (Adler, 1989, p.25).
Invitation to the Pain of Learning
Said the only people who truly struggle in college are law & medical students
Said students will not really work hard until they have to do it to earn a living. Not even college students will understand the true pain of learning.
"In one view, education is something externally added to a person, as his clothing and other accoutrements" (Adler, 1989, p.35).
In the other view, education is an interior transformation of a person's mind and character" (Adler, 1989, p.35).
