Conscious
Includes all the sensations & experiences of which we are aware at any given moment
Preconscious
Storehouse of memories.
perceptions and thoughts of which we are not aware at the moment but that we can easily summon into consciousness.
Unconscious
contains the major driving power behind all behaviors and is the respiratory of forces we cannot see or control.
Structure of Personality
ID
(Child)
operates according to the pleasure principle
hunger, sex, aggression, irrational impulses
EGO( cop)
directing and controlling the instincts according to the reality principle.
moderator between the id and the superego, controlling wishes and desires.
ability to interact with the outside
world with appropriate goals and activities
SUPEREGO(the judge)
moral aspect of personality; the internalization of parental and societal values and standards.

Projection
Blame others for the mistakes we make
Rationalization
Explain the unacceptable manner by ovoiding the true reasonfor that manner.
Regression
reversion to immature patterns of behaviour.
e.g :An adult has atemper tantrum when he doesn't get his way.
Intellectuazation
works to reduce anxiety by thinking about events in a cold, clinical way.
person who has just been diagnosed with a terminal illness might focus on learning everything about the disease in order to avoid distress and remain distant from the reality of the situation.
Sublimation
Allows us to act out unacceptable impulses by converting these behaviors into a more acceptable form
e.g: person experiencing extreme anger might take up kick boxing as a means of venting frustration.
Introjection
Consists of taking in and “swallowing” the values and standards of others
Positive - Incorporation of parental values
Negative – the abused child who assumes the abusing parent’s way of handling stresses and thus continues the cycle of child beating
