-
Rational numbers include integers, recurring decimals and terminating decimals

NEGATIVE DECIMALS
If both numbers are either positive or negative, the result is positive
If one number is positive and teh other is negative, the result is negative
Estimation
-
-
-
Sometimes, people round the number before putting it in the calculator
Chapter 2
Integers
Intergers are positive whole numbers. They are also negative whole numbers, and Zero too.
-
Z= {... -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 ... }
Adding intergers
-
-
To add a negative integer, move to the left.
Subtracting integers
Subtracting an integer gives the same result as adding its opposite. For example, -3-5=-3+5=-3+-5=8. Note that +5 and -5 are opposites.
By developing and extending a pattern, we can show that subtracting a negative has the same effect as adding a positive.
In mathematics, a number without a positive or negative sign is considered to be positive. So 8 + +4 can be written as 8 + 4 and -5 - +1 can be written as -5 - 1.
-
Dividing integers
Division of integers
Division is the inverse operation of multiplication. We can use the multiplication facts for the directed numbers to discover the division facts for directed numbers.
-
Remember that division statement can be written as fractions and then simplified. For example: -12/-4= -12y/4-y= 3.
