Football is very popular in Burkina Faso, played both professionally and informally in towns and villages across the country.The national team is nicknamed "Les Etalons" ("the Stallions") in reference to the legendary horse of Princess Yennenga.In 1998, Burkina Faso hosted the African Cup of Nations wherein they reached the semi-finals which qualified them for the FIFA World Youth Championship that was held in UAE, 2003. According to the fifa ranking Burkina Baso is positioned in 62 place.

Another sport that has picked up popularity is cycling since it is also a means of transportation for the Burkinabés. They even hold an annual race called Tour du Faso in November and has been part of the UCI Africa Tour since 2005.
Rugby union
Rugby union, in Burkina Faso is relatively new, but growing more popular every year. Rugby was introduced by the French, who had ruled Burkina Faso.

Basketball is one of the top sports in Burkina Faso for both men and women. Its national team had its best year in 2013 when it qualified for the AfroBasket, the continent's most prestigious basketball event.

As far as the Olympics are concerned, the country first joined the Summer Olympic Games in the 1972 Munich Games then skipped the three following games. They then again joined the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and to date, they are yet to take home a single Olympic medal.
The country's traditional sports include wrestling and archery. The wrestlers were classified according to weight while the archers are divided among adults (30 meters) and young (20 meters).
