Community Nutrition

Public Health Nutrition
: “The science of promoting population health status via sustainable and equitable improvements in the food and nutrition system.”
Core Functions
Build Capacity
Build systems to facilitate and coordinate effect public health nutrition action
Build community capacity to engage in, identify and build solutions to nutrition problems/issues
Intervention Management
Enhance and sustain population knowledge and awareness so that dietary choices and informed choices
Plan, develop and implement interventions that address nutrition issues and promote equity
Promote equitable access to safe and healthy food so that healthy choices are easy choices
Research & Analysis
Develop and Communicate Intelligence
Monitor, Assess and Communicate Health Needs and Issues

PREVENTION
SECONDARY
: Ways to stop/slow down disease progression by targeting at-risk groups
TERTIARY
: Managing/Rehabilitating individuals with diagnosed health conditions to improve quality of life
PRIMARY
: Reducing/Removing risk factors by environmental or community change
INTERVENTION
COMMUNITY
: Targeted toward large groups or populations but cannot be personalised
SYSTEM
: Changes in organisations, policies, laws, or structures of the systems that serve individuals and communities
INDIVIDUAL
: Produce changes in knowledge, behaviour or health outcomes of individuals or small groups
