Death Penalty
How did the Normans change punishments
Fines, not wergeld
This was also done as a deterrence as the fines were very expensive
Breaking the Kings law was a crime against the king
Wergeld was paid in fines to the kings now to raise money for the king
Normans were less worried about restitution
Harsher Punishments
There was more of a regular use of death penalty
Murdrum fine was used for villages which refused to tell authorities who killed a Norman
Brought in Forest Laws and breaking them led to death after a few offences
They did this as there was 300 Saxons for every Norman and hoped the Anglo Saxons would fear the Normans with the harsh punishments
Normans were now more harsh as they wanted to deter the Saxons from breaking the law
Church courts (more lenient punishments)
