ASSIMILATION
Voicing Changes
Intervocalic Voicing
when a voiceless consonant in the intervocalic position takes on voicing due to the vowels surrounding it
Alveolar Tap
the allophone of the singleton /t/ and or /d/ in the intervocalic position. The sound is much quicker than if every phoneme were pronounced at an even pace.
-
Placement Changes
Labial Assimilation
when a nonlabial consonant shifts to a labial consonant because of another labial consonant in the word
Example
Grandma and Grandpa are pronounced as "grama" and "grampa" because it is much easier than pronouncing every phoneme

Definition
the change of a phoneme in place, manner, or voicing due to the effect of a neighboring sound
OTHER CHANGES
Duration
the length of vowel sounds is influenced by the manner of articulation of the consonant that follows them
Syllabics
occurs to the resonant consonants (/m/ /n/ /l/), the duration is increased so they take the role of a syllable without a vowel
