Chapter 7 Jaelyn Sutphin
valance electrons
-
To find the number of valance electrons in an atom of a representative element, simply look at its group number
example: the elements of group 1A all have one valance electron, and group 5A they all have 5 valance electrons.
-
Formation of cations
An atoms loss of valance electrons produces a cation, or a positively charged ion.
Formation of anions
-
Dots around the element symbol, plus and negative charge beside, each dot represents an electron in the valance shell in the electron configuration

Alloys
Mixtures composed of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal
Alloys are important because their properties are often superior to those of their component elements.
