What are Assessments?
Assessments are tools for teachers to gather data of students' academic performance/knowledge to help teachers to reflect and make changes to instruction or provide interventions for students' academic growth.
Formative
Formative: Gathering data or evidence on students' learning. Teachers provide feedback and use it to adjust instruction to enhance achievement.
Examples: Quizzes, discussions questions, pre-assessments, exit tickets
Interim/Benchmark
A kind of a formal formative assessment that is periodic testing throughout the school year. It is a low level or no student feedback assessment.
Examples: Chapter or Unit Exams, Every six weeks exams,
Summative
Assessments that evaluate student learning at the end of the instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
Examples: Midterm exam, final projects, final papers/essays, standardized, final exams.
Performance
Assessments that checks students' strengths and weaknesses. Teachers use it to observe students performances and what they have created.
Examples: Journals, Portfolios
Diagnostic
It is a form of a pre-assessment for the teacher to reflect and examine students' knowledge and enhance instruction.
Examples: Pre-Assessments, questionnaires, pre-tests.
