Assessments
Performance
Definition: also known as alternative or authentic assessment, is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.
Portfolios: Student portfolios can include items that students have created and collected over a period.
Presentations: a performance-based activity is to have them do a presentation or report of some kind. This activity could be done by students, which takes time, or in collaborative groups.
Summative
Definition: state or district-wide standardized tests that measure grade-level proficiency, and end-of-year subject or course exams.

End-of-unit or chapter tests: Tests that the students take after finishing a unit or chapter to test their knowledge over what all they learned.
Diagnostic
Definition:a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction. It is primarily used to diagnose student difficulties and to guide lesson and curriculum planning.

Preliminary test: administered to determine a student's baseline knowledge or preparedness for an educational experience or course of study.
Formative
Definition: planned classroom practice to elicit evidence of learning minute to minute, day by day in the classroom that occur while content is still being taught.
THINK-PAIR-SHARE: The instructor asks a question, and students write down their answers. Students are then placed in pairs to discuss their responses. Teachers are able to move around the classroom and listen to various discussions. It lets them gain valuable insight into levels of understanding.
EXIT/ADMIT TICKET: Exit tickets are small pieces of paper or cards that students deposit as they leave the classroom. Students write down an accurate interpretation of the main idea behind the lesson taught that day.Admit tickets are done at the very beginning of the class. Students may respond to questions about homework, or on the lesson taught the day before.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: tests administered at different intervals throughout the year to evaluate student knowledge and skills relative to a specific set of academic goals. Results are used to inform instruction and decision making at the classroom, school and district level, and can be used to measure student growth over time.
