Astronomers use a trident as Neptune¨s planetary symbol because of the real god¨s magical/mystical trident
Neptune is the Roman equal to Poseidon, as they are both gods of the seas in their religions, etc.
Other planets are named after Roman gods too, but not greek even though they are the same person. (Jupiter-father of the gods, Pluto- underworld god, in contrast to greek god Hades
Interesting enough, Neptune (god) is the brother of Jupiter and Pluto
