BSR or Purposeful Rounding (JMB)
Bedside Rounding/Report (JS)
Benefits (JS)
Patient
Keeps patients involved in their health care allowing for better outcomes and decreased miscommunication. (JS)
Increase level of safety. (JK) :
Decrease in patient falls (SA)
Reduction in skin breakdown (SA)
Build trust. (JK)
Opportunity for the patient to ask questions. (JS)
Improved patient perceptions of care (SA)
Patient/Nurse Relationship
Opportunity to share important information. (JS)
Opportunity for the patient to meet their nurse. (JS)
Builds rapport with patient (CO)
Allows nurse to visualize patient (CO)
Reduction in call light use (SA)
Facility
Nurse accountability (JK)
Improved satisfaction scores (JK)
Increased revenue (JK)
Incorporation of bedside reporting into change-of-shift report. (JS)
Decreased risk for unnecessary/duplicate procedures. (JS)
Barriers (SA)

Clinical Questions :
How has bedside shift report influenced patient satisfaction? (JS) :star:
From Prof Bass:
Also another option to explore. Can easily be translated into a PICOT question. :pencil2:
How has the rate of error been effected since the implementation of bedside report? (JS) :star:
From Prof Bass:
If heading in this direction. Think more specifically about what errors you want to look at. Keep it simple. :pencil2:
Specific errors could include:
Medication error, delay in diagnosis, misdiagnosis, infection. (JS)
Can beside shift reports improve patient engagement in their care to improve outcomes? (JK)
From Prof Bass:
Looks like bedside shift report was determined to be the topic. Make sure PICOT questions are about BSR.
Can bedside shift report improve patient experience to increase satisfaction scores? (JK)
Revised 4/6: In adult hospital medical inpatients, how does bedside shift reports, compared to standard shift reports, influence patient satisfaction (HCAHPS) over the duration of hospital admission? (JK)
I think all of these questions are great! I really like the PICOT question developed by James. I feel it is very specific and incorporates the theme of our Coogle. I feel this question allows us to obtain and provide sold research articles allowing for a quality project! (JS)
What is everyone's thoughts? (JS)
Bedside report: Safe hand-off of care between nurses by involving the patient and their family members. (JS)
Shift Report: Discussion of patient condition and any changes during previous shift. Summary of individual patient progress. (JS)
Can bedside shift reports improve nurses satisfaction in providing patient care? (JK)
Confirmation of agreed on research question: In adult hospital medical inpatients, how does bedside shift reports, compared to standard shift reports, influence patient satisfaction over the duration of hospital admission? (JS) (JK)
I feel this question will give us the opportunity to obtain abundant, current, reliable research. I feel patient satisfaction reports are increasing utilized by hospital administration and many nursing interventions are influenced by these reports. (JS)
Agreed (JK)
In adult hospital medical inpatients, how does bedside shift reports, compared to standard shift reports, influence patient satisfaction over three months? (JK)
Final edit with Janeens recommendation about time.
Feedback from Professor Bass
: Looks like you have some good avenues to explore here. It's always a matter of 'proving' that BSR is worthwhile. The clinical questions on the right are something to think about. When developing your PICOT questions think about what is measurable? For this weeks module each team member will post their own PICOT question based off of the brainstorming that's been done here. There are many PICOT questions that can be developed. Post to the BSR thread.
Any of the sub-topics that you have can be developed into PICOT questions as well.
