Stem structure - Consists of node and point of attachment of leaf to stem, internode (stem between two nodes), blade (flattened leaf part), petiole (leaf stalk), axil (angle between petiole/blade and stem), axillary bud (shoot branching with leaves or flowers), and terminal bud (shoot extension during growing season).
Internal stem structure - monocot vascular bundles that are usually scattered throughout ground tissue systems, and eudicot vascular tissue that is in a ring with the internal ground tissue (pith) and the external ground tissue (cortex).
Secondary growth - stem's ability to continue growth. Vascular structure is directly related to continued growth; Eudicots have a vascular cambium between the primary xylem and phloem that connects the rings of the primary vascular bundles; Monocots have no vascular cambium or continued growth.
Annual growth - annual vascular patters of cambium growth. Revealed by tree rings; cell size shows growth conditions; in woody eudicots and gymnosperms, the cork cambium arises in the outer cortex and produces box-like cork cells on the outside layer and parenchyma-like phelloderm cells on the inside layer; and collectively the cork and phelloderm layers are termed periderm.
Lenticel - specialized structure of the cork cambium that produces unsuberized (non-cork or non-converted phellem) cells that permit gas exchange to continue.
