THE UNIVERSE
-
Planets
Rocky planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars; small in size and mainly composed of rocks and metals.
Gas planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune; large in size, light and composed of gases and ice.
Seasons
The tilt of the Earth’s axis when it revolves around the Sun produces the seasons. These depend on the angle of the Sun’s rays when they reach the Earth’s surface.
They are: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn
Galaxies
A galaxy is an enormous group of stars, planets, gases and dust held together by the force of gravity.
Stars
Stars are large balls of gas which produce and emit great amounts of energy in the form of light and heat.

The Solar System
A solar system is a group of planets and other celestial bodies which orbit a star.
Our solar system was formed approximately 4 600 million years ago from an immense cloud of gas and dust
The Universe is space and everything that exists in it, including planets, stars, other celestial bodies and galaxies.

Earth, our home planet, is the third planet from the Sun. It is larger than the three other rocky planets and has only one satellite: the Moon.
The Earth’s axis is a straight imaginary line which the Earth rotates around. The Earth’s axis is not perpendicular to the plane of the ecliptic, but tilted 23.5°. Due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis, the lengths of day and night in a place vary during a year depending on its latitude and also on the season.
