Media- an intervening means thru which a force acts or an effect is produced
mass media- refers to a form of communication where large audiences quickly receive a given message via an impersonal medium
influences beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors
mass media are shapers (in that their form & content affect us in some way--ie; influence the products we buy), spreaders (in that they extend our capacity as humans to process info & by such transform using some say--ie; enhance our ability to multitask), and transformers (in that new media create new environments as well as new ways of looking at existing environments--ie; digital technology)
outcomes of mass media outcomes are difficult to measure b/c many variables: 1. child variables (age, cognitive ability, gender, social experience, & psychological needs); 2. family variables (economics, time, alternative leisure activities are pursued, mediation & supervision given); 3. bidirectional variables (computer knowledge--can he download software himself), how media experience changes the child,--"It is not what the media does to people but what people do with the media"

The Great Lie=Pornography
lie1: to represent as true what is known to be false. Delude. to deliberately mislead, betray.
Millions of dollars go into research on how to quickly seduce and tempt people. Their sole intent of seducing you into a world of self-gratifying lust and deceit.
lie2: one look won't hurt!
Pornography is founded on the delusion that what is portrayed is real, but it is a base & degrading imposter of love & true intimacy. Great effort goes into making it look attractive, but it is fabricated, manufactured & constructed the same as commercials.
May appear beautiful & alluring, but it is fiction. The powerful urges & feelings it arouses are real but stimulating those urges & drives with porn creates an illusion that love & intimacy are only about sex and sex alone. It is an insidious counterfeit of pure, self-sacrificing love.
Lie 3: it's harmless
Lie 4: It's not a big deal.
Lie 5: I can stop anytime.
Lie 6: Pornography is harmless.
You begin to live a double life and hide what you are doing, in the end it can take something wonderful & sacred from you. It can be as harmful & addictive as drugs or alcohol--the effect is gradual, but over time and continued exposure there are consequences.
Lie 7: I am in control.
LIe 8: I'm not addicted.
Lie 9: There are no long term effects
Lie 10: I'm not hurting anyone (and it is victimless)
pornography creates unreal expectations. It is a fraudulent massage about human sexuality & intimacy. Pornography has even been proven to deaden the male sexual response in relation to real women & natural feelings.
TRUTH: Pornography can ruin your life
TRUTH: talk to someone, it will help.
TRUTH: you can flee from pornography
TRUTH: Pornography is more powerful than you think.
TRUTH: It's your choice.
TRUTH: Hope is found in Christ.
TRUTH: You are a child of God.
Things as they really are--

Jolts & Tricks
the development of the neural network is use dependent. Emotion is key, b/c it drives behavior, is also a major determinant of what we remember & an essential ingredient of attitude and motivates us to act.
As you read to children, they are developing incredible power of imagination & forming neural networks to support imagination and later creativity.
neural network development peaks at 7y
goal of TV is not to teach but to deliver advertisements--so it needs to keep you watching. Best way to do that is with emotional jolt--that gets our attention. also technical tricks get and keep our attention--like--special effects, pacing, animation, music, edits, camera angels, graphics, color, volume, and lighting.
it is powerful and how to use it is within our control
