Test
Definition
An instrument for measuring a sample of behaviour. It consists of a set of questions to be answered and administered over a fixed period of time
An instrument that measures how much and how far the learners have achieved
Measurement
Definition
Process of obtaining a quantitative description of any behavioural
Examples of measurement of educational attributes or constructs are cognitive performance, intellectual ability and attitudes
Evaluation
Definition
A systematic process of collecting, analysing and interpreting information to determine the extent in which students achieve instructional objectives (Gay, 1985)
Assessment
Definition
Process of decision making based on certain rules or standards. It’s part of the process of learning which include the activities of interpretation, collecting, recording, scoring and translation of information related to the learning of students for certain purposes (Lembaga Peperiksaan M’sia, 2000)
Assessment &. Testing
Assessment and measurement can be considered synonymous. When assessment is taking place, information or data are being collected and measurement is being conducted.
(does not include making judgments about the data, that is evaluation)
If a test is used for data collection, then assessment or measurement is being conducted through testing.
What do we want to assess?
Procedural knowledge:
knowing how to reason, inquire, and present knowledge in the discipline
Metacognition:
cognitive control strategies such as setting goals, determining when additional information is needed, and assessing the fruitfulness of a line of inquiry
Declarative knowledge:
knowing the facts and concepts in the discipline
