OCB Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives Brainstorm
Training/Education
Training on different cultures (similar to study abroad cultural orientation)
Research on HOW to train so that it is effective and engaging
Be informed on community issues so that we know what issues students may be facing
Core university classes - mandatory requirements for students
Mandatory requirements for faculty and staff
Training needs to address multiple identities
Training needs to be planned to be ongoing
Cross-industry trainings
Same industry, too: business leaders should address issues for business students/staff
Working across departments and colleges on similar issues
D&I people and resources to go to
Who is the go-to person for people to lean on when they face issues?
Before you get here
Overtly act on our values internally and externally
Ethical issues with taking money or support from donors who don't believe in or support inclusion
Are we serious about our goals?
What is ethical?
More promotion of our current expectations and values externally and internally, so everyone understands our community's commitment to diversity and inclusion
Inclusive images (posters, magazines)
Concern about reflecting reality -- need to be transparent about where we're at.
Prospective members of underrepresented groups meeting with staff/faculty who have similar experience
Concern about reflecting reality
Concern about relying on the same people (faculty, staff, students) to represent "diversity"
In the classroom
Inclusion statement on syllabi
Case studies in classes that drill deeper about inclusion
How would this work?
Modeling and teaching person-centered language (Using "person who is differently abled vs. differently abled person")
Have students introduce themselves (not read off the roster)
Be willing to discuss racist incidents and other issues in our community (many OCB faculty didn't address last fall, one who did acknowledged it, but didn't allow for conversation)
Go beyond diversity in the numbers (for example, when studying the "diversity" of a business). Many forms of diversity cannot be tracked.
What do you do with the numbers we see?
Important to consider multiple aspects of identity (this is not reflected in the numbers).
"Other" (ex. physical space, foods, student life)
Have ethnic foods at OCB events and meetings
