Fiction Book Genres - What is Fantasy
A genre is a category.
Fictions is a story from the author's imagination.
Stating that a book is a fiction book does not give one many details about what is actually in the book. Because of this, fiction books are divided up into more specific fiction genres.
Fantasy books typically include aspects like wizards, dragons, unicorns, and elves
Fantasy means imaginary, make believe, or pretend and comes from an old world meaning visions or dreams
Fantasy contains unreal things that could never be real in our world
Fantasy authors make unreal things real the world of their stories.
A fantasy book might be set in a completely made up universe or in a made-up version of the real world with a few new rules for whats normal. When considering introducing this topic to students, I would use mermaids as an example.
