Diverticular Disease
Complications
-

-
-
Perforation. Ileus, peritonitis then shock. Mortality is 40%
Pathophysiology
High intraluminal pressures force the mucosa to herniate through the muscle layers of the gut at weak points adjacent to penetrating vessels
-
-
The diverticulum can then rupture, releasing faeces into the peritoneal cavity. This leads to peritonitis
Definitions
-
Diverticulitis = Inflammation of diverticula. Occurs when faeces obstruct the neck of the diverticulum
Diverticulum = An outpouching of the gut wall, usually at sites of entry of perforating arteries
