Breathing mechanism
Respiration
Entire process of exchanging gases between atmosphere and body cells. Breathing or ventilation invovles moving air in and our of the lungs cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondrion of the cell.
Pulmonary Ventilation
Movement of air in lungs; depends on pressure gradient. Before inspiration, pressure in lungs .
Inspiration
size of thoratic cavity increases and the pressure decreases. Diaphragm moves down. Ribes move up and sternum forward. Forced inhalation scalenes muscles, sternocleidonmastoid, and pectoralis minor
Expiration
Passive Process- diaphragm and rib muscles relax. Elastic recoil of stretched elastic fibers of lungs decrease while lung volume and pressure increase, forcing air out of the lungs
