The book represents education and Colombia is bringing it to the americans.
The painting explains Manifest Destiny (1845) and the westward expansion.

People moved to find more opportunities and also for the spirit of adventure.
People traveled by horse, by transcontinental train or by ship (circumnavigation of South America).
Other options were on a stage coach, which was public transport, or on a covered wagon, in which they lived until a house was built.
Many pioneers wanted to discover new territories
Everyone thought that going west and claiming some territories would mean going from rags to riches and accomplishing the "american dream".
Manifest Destiny was a term coined during the 19th century in the United States referring to a belief that its settlers were destined to expand across North America.

There are some cultivated areas, some buffalos and natives.

Slavery
Slaves were imported from Africa to Virginia
They were labor force for the plantations
Mostly in the south, where the economy was based on agriculture

Large farms recquired a large labor force
This labor force was made up of slaves
In the north the economy was based on industries
Labor force made up of immigrants
Not mentioned in the constitution because they were considered property

Slaves were no longer imported from Africa, they were born in America.
They had fewer problems because they knew the customs, the language and the territory

A way for the runway slaves to go north
Some people gave shelter to slaves
It was illegal, even in the north.
Slave catchers searched for slaves in the north
they tried to get to Canada so that they woud be free
Colonization
Indians worked with France to stop British colonization.
The british were pushing natives out of their territories.

The natives were forced to go to Oklahoma
The territories aren't very fertile.
They were acquired through:
fighting
purchase
negotiation
They lived on reservations
Patches of land specifically for indians
Change in lifestyle
from nomads to farmers
from tribes to family units
They were civilized through education and religion (protestantism)

A deadly journey to arrive to Oklahoma
It was on foot and about 4000 people died during it.
Abraham Lincoln
He was a part of the Republic party and was their candidate for president in 1860
It was created in the 1850s and it was anti-slavery.
He was born in 1809 in Kentucky
He lived in a 1 room log cabin on the frontier
He attended school for 1 year. He had very little education but was very intelligent.
He had to walk 4 miles to get to school
He was self taught and became a lawyer
He moved with his family to Illinois and started working at a general store
He earned a reputation for being honest and was named "Honest Abe"
He got married and started practiting law in Springfield.
He got involved in the state legislature and became a congress man
He was the representative for Illinois in Washington D.C.
He won the election and became the 16th president of the United States
After his election 11 southern states withdrew from the Union
They formed the Confederacy
Their president was Jefferson Davis
They had their own currency
Their flag is now associated with racism
The Grey troops were the army and Robert E.Lee was the leader
The "land of Lee" in Virginia became Arlington cemetery.
The Blue troops were the army of the north. One of their leaders was Ulysses S. Grant
He became the 18th president

Freeing of slaves in the Confederacy
Many slaves left the south to join the northern army

He freed all of the slaves in the 13th amendment (1865)
He was shot by a souhern sympathizer in a theater in the same year
Lincoln was unable to reconstrut the country.
