stops the importation of slaves from Africa
no longer African slaves
slaves were only american
American slaves:
know the language and customs
can read and write
know territories - if they run away they find shelter easier
Underground railroad: a way to run away to the north - because slavery wasn't legal anymore
Go to Canada to be free
Slave-catchers: they searched and killed runaway slaves in the north
