-
Sufficient Agreement and Best Known Nonmatch: based on examiner's training, skills, and experience
Physical Characteristics: class, individual, and subclass characteristics
Microscopic Procedures
Recovered Firearm With Related Evidence: test fire the firearm and compare the test bullets to the recovered bullets to see draw conclusions: either elimination, identification, or inconclusive
Evidence Without Related Firearm: document recovered bullets and compare to other recovered bullets in order to link cases
Recovered Firearm Without Related Evidence: document firearm and test fire to obtain bullets for later comparison
-
Casting
Bullet Surface Replication: casts are taken of bullets in cases where the actual bullet isn't available to the examiner
Casts must be compared to other casts, as they are reversals of the bullets' surface
Bullet Examination
In cases of firearm with related bullets: test fire the firearm and compare the test bullets with the recovered evidence bullets
In cases of bullets without related firearm: compare bullets to determine whether they came from a single or multiple sources
In cases of firearm without related bullets: test fire the firearm to recover bullets for future reference
Case Linkage: all evidence from unsolved or open cases is saved in order to facilitate case linkage down the line- data is kept in IBIS
