Understanding the ethical responsibility of the school counselor to "protect members from harm as a result of interactions within the group" is imperative. (ASCA, 2016, p. 4). Utilizing collaboration and consultation with teachers and others in the school community can help school counselors in learning information such as students' ethnicity, culture, developmental abilities, gender, sexual orientation, current situations (i.e. familial issues), etc., when considering participants for specific groups (Sink et al., 2012). Assessing the "needs, expectations, and appropriateness of potential group members" is a vital role of the school counselor in the creation of small groups(Tyson, Perusse, & Whitledge, 2004, p.11).
