African Kingdom of Mali + the Six Aspects of Culture
Political
Sudaita Keita was the first king of Mali who built up a huge army with many generals
Mansa Musa opened up many trade routes and protected many caravans. He also built Timbuktu as a large trade city
Social
All citizens were forced to pay taxes and all goods entering must be paid for in taxes.
Most citizens were Muslims and frequently made Hajj trips if they could afford it.
Economic
Mansa Musa opened up trade routes with the rest of the world.
Some goods traded were gold dust, rice, millet, salt, ivory, cloth, and slaves in the slave trade.
Gold and salt helped Mali to stay very wealthy.
Science and Technology
Mansa Musa made Timbuktu a center for learning, wealth, and religion.
The University of Sankore (Sankore Madrassah) produced many astronomers, scholars, and engineers, even when the empire ended.
A Madrassah is an Islamic place of learning.
Art. Language, and Literature
When Mansa Musa came back from his Hajj, he brought back scholars, teachers, and books for the library from Makkah.
Since Mali was a mostly Muslim kingdom, Arabic was widely spoken. However, other indigenous languages were also spoken.
Religion and Philosophy
Most of Mali was Muslim.
Mansa Musa went on Hajj during his reign to show how devout of Muslims people in his empire should be.
Even though the majority was Muslim, many citizens practiced tribal religions since religious freedom was enforced.
