Functions of fibers and matrix

Fibers

To carry the load

Provide stifness/ strength/thermal stability

Provide electrical conductivity /insulation

Matrix

Binds the fibers together & transfer the load to fiber

Isolates the fibers.(add separately to stop/ slow down crack propagation

Provides a good surface finish quality.

Provides protection to reinforcing fiber against chemical attack & mechanical damage

provides performance characteristics(Ductility, impact strength, toughness)

Failure mode(type of matrix, compatibility with fiber)

Advantages of composites

high performance & light weight

Provides capabilities for part integration(several metallic compound can be replaced by single composite)

In-service or online process monitoring with
the help of embedded sensors (if use)

High specific stiffness (stiffness to density
ratio)

Very high specific strength (strength to
density ratio)

Higher fatigue strength

High corrosion resistance

disadvantages

Very high material cost

The temperature resistance of composite
parts depend on T of matrix.

.

Composites absorb moisture
