Citizens in Japan can register to receive tsunami warnings, so they can usually get information about earthquakes or tsunamis on Tv, Radio, Mobile Phone and Government wireless warnings.
Japanese usually prepare for emergency goods at home, such as 3 days of food, drinking water, evacuation items, emergency items, lifestyle items, important items and clothing just in case if tsunami or earthquake occurs.
Notes

The tsunami occurred because of a magnitude 9.0 undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred, with epicentre approximately 90 km east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tohoku and the hypocenter at an underwater depth of approximately 30 km.
Many electrical generators were taken down, and at least three nuclear reactors suffered explosions due to hydrogen gas that had built up within their outer containment buildings after cooling system failure.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan described this earthquake and tsunami as the country's worst crisis since World War 2.
