- - - - Glucose usually filters freely in nephron but in diabetes increased amounts of glucose cannot be reabsorbed.
        
        Glucose is osmotically active therefore water follows = increased urine.
  - - - The body breaks down fats stored in the adipose tissue = lipolysis & body breaks down proteins within the muscles
        
        This causing weight loss and increased hunger as the body is being deprived of nutrients.

        Good = increases energy
        
        Bad = increased acidity of blood - can have bad effects e.g. Kussmaul respiration (Deep laboured breathing)
        
        Produces acetone = fruity breath
        
        Signs and Symptoms
        
        Nausea
        
        Vommiting
        
        Mental status changes
        
        Cerebral edema
        
        Wound healing is delayed as glucose is often secreated from wound sight as there are larger amounts in the blood this causes bacteria to be drawn to the sight therefore causing increased risk of wound site infections.
        
        Treatment
        
        Fluids for dehydration
        
        Insulin to lower blood glucose
        
        Electrolytes (K+)
