Plants
-
Vocabulary
vascular: tubular tissues in more complex organisms that allow for the transport
ex) Flowering plants are vascular because they have xylem and phloem to carry food, water, and nutrients.
pollination: the transfer of pollen to allow fertilization; pollen carries plant sperm, it must be transferred to the female part of the plant
ex) Pollination can occur by wind, water, or moving organisms.
gymnosperm: cone-bearing plants that are vascular and have seeds but have no flowers
ex) Pine trees are gymnosperm.
angiosperm: flowering plants; fruit plants
ex) Angiosperms are very pretty flowers,
guard cell: specicated cell on the underside of leaf, controls gas exchange/water loss; opens and closes and turgor pressure
ex) To maintain homeostasis, plants must balance CO2 absorbed through the air with water loss through the stomata. This is controlled by guard cell.
transpiration: gas exchange in a plant: CO2 in, O2 out
-
Tropisms: plant's physical responses to their environment to maintain homeostasis; positive or negative feedback
geotropism/gravitropism: plants grows against the pull of gravity (even if the plant is planted sideways, it will grow up and down

turgor pressure: hormones causes vacuoles to swell with water inside certain parts of the plants to allow for quick movements

Chloroplasts
green, function: photosynthesis, found on anything green on a plant
Needs for Plant Survival
sunlight absorbed by chlorophyll, water absorbed by roots, minerals, gas exchange through photosynthesis and cell respiration, nutrient movement through xylem and phloem
Seasonal Categories
perennials: live more than 2 years
biennials entire life cycle in two seasons
annuals: live for only one season
Capillary Action
Water adheres (stickes) to the walls of objects it touches. The smaller the opening, the higher the water will be pulled to touch the side. Used to pull water and the nutrients up from the ground
