Ice Cores
An ice core is a hole drilled miles deep through sheets of ice to measure the amount of trapped Carbon Dioxide (Locked in air bubbles in ice)

Surface Impact
Objects from outer space hit earth, ejecting dust into the atmosphere, blocking solar radiation and causing cooler temperatures
Solar Variation
-
Periods of low solar activity are likely to produce cooler periods (glacial) where as periods of of high solar activity are likely to lead to warmer periods (interglacial)
Volcanism
Some eruptions can produce so much material that it blocks radiation from the sun causing reduced temperatures and causing glacial periods
-
Milankovic
Eccentricity
The earths orbit changes shape over approximately 100,000 years
This means that the earth's orbit around the sun is more circular making us slightly warmer (interglacial) and sometimes it can be more elliptical, making us slightly cooler (glacial)
Precession
As the earth rotates on its axis, it does not do so perfectly
As the earth spins, it wobbles and as this happens, the direction of the axis changes
This impacts our seasons and creates either greater or smaller differences between summer and winter
This occurs over a period of approximately 24,000 years
Axial Tilt
Over a period of over 40,000 years, the angle of tilt changes (further away) so summers are warmer and winters are cooler
-
If tilted closer, season difference is less

Transport
-
Transport has developed hugely with flights becoming more common and cars becoming more affordable - meaning more fossil fuels burned
-
Industry
-
As levels of disposable income rise, increased demand for goods has arisen
