GI upset, weight gain, sexual dysfunction, increased body temperature
apathy, agitation, sedation, insomnia
SSRI/SNRI

Common side effects
agitation, hypertension, insomnia
increased body temperature, sweating, dizziness, nausea
SNRI's good for patients whose depressive symptoms of symptoms of inertia, low energy, low motivation
not helpful when high anxiety present

gold standard of rx in Bipolar disorder, beneficial for suicidal thoughts
requires on-going monitoring of serum lithium level (therapeutic range 0.6-1.2 mEq/L),

Side effects: sedation, weight gain, GI upset

Gabapentin
many off-label uses including mood regulation, anxiety, sleep and fibromyalgia

Antipsychotics - used in treatment of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and other psychotic disorders

Anxiolytics

benzodiazepines
issues with overuse, addiction, tolerance, sedation, falls, rebound anxiety -- dangerous and potentially fatal withdrawal

E.g. Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Valium, Librium
Other agents: Buspar, Gabapentin, Atenelol, Guanfacine, Clonidine, Prazosin

Prazosin useful for PTSD pts who experince hypearousal, flashbacks, nightmares

Cholinterase inhibitors
Brain functioning capacity diminishes with acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin decreases --> Cholinesterase inhibitors used to prevent memory impairment
N-methyl d-aspartate glutamate receptor antagonists reduce activation of glutamate neurotransmission from plaque, neurofibrillary tangles.
Anticholinesterases
Multiple neurotransmitter dysfunctions present in degenerative cognitive processes
Cognitive symptoms, personality changes, psychotic symptoms, depression and anxiety can co-occur, requiring use of other medications as well
no therapies are available to reverse the process of any dementia, these meds may slow down the process
