Dawn Raids 1974
Consequences
Because of this the police would raid peoples houses at dawn to search for over stayers and would arrest them.
Many pacific people wouldn't return back to New Zealand because of what happened. Some had to wait after a few years to legally come back to New Zealand.
Although the dawn raids had mostly negative connotations, some good did come out of it.They gave a voice for Pacific people to fight against discrimination towards them. It allowed them to join together as one and not as separate Polynesian nations to work together to help their social hardships. (dawnraidsnz.weebly.com/aftermath.html)
Many Polynesians then became activists and spokespeople for Polynesian rights, which also got them involved in conflicts like the Springbok tour and Bastion point as it was to do with racial issues like the dawn raids. (dawnraidsnz.weebly.com/aftermath.html)
Causes
Labour shortage
-
There were a series of energy crises between 1967 and 1979 caused by problems in the Middle East but the most significant started in 1973 when Arab oil producers imposed an embargo
Racism / Eurocentrism
Chinese people- weren't treated right. Used them for the gold rush and once they weren't needed they didn't respond to any of the Chinese people

Economic downturn
-
The government tried to step in and reduce the effects of the crisis through a number of projects that were very unpopular with New Zealanders- carless days for example meant that people were only allowed to drive on certain days of the week to reduce oil consumption in New Zealand.
New Zealand was hit especially hard by the oil crisis as we relied largely on the US and other Western countries for our supply of oil. These same countries that sold us oil were the ones that mainly bought our products- Wool, dairy and other products were not being bought as much in 1970 due to the crisis.
In October 1973, the United States supported Israel after a surprise attack by Egypt and Syria in the Yom Kippur War. The oil-rich nations of the Middle East, already angry with the United States for devaluing the dollar (the currency used to purchase oil) determined to exact their revenge with an oil embargo
Significance
Historical Significance
The significance of the dawn raids showed the issues that are surrounding New Zealand's system in immigration and how contradictory it had been towards the Polynesian people who had come to work for them. (dawnraidsnz.weebly.com/aftermath.html )
