Malaria
Two stages in the life cycle of the parasite
(1). In humans the parasite enters the liver where it reproduces in the red blood cells. This causes the red blood cells to burst.
(2). When the female Anopheles Mosquito sucks up the infected blood from the human the parasite moves through the digestive Tract of the Mosquito. The parasite matures here and if the mosquito visits another human in infects that person too.
Symptoms and death
Symptoms
Fever
Headache
Vomiting
Other flu-like symptoms
Death caused by
Destruction of red blood cells
Anaemia
and/or clogging of capillaries in the brain
Cerebral malaria
Namely Plasmodium
(a single celled protozoan parasite)
A VECTOR carries the parasite from the host to infect another without being harmed by the Parasite
This VECTOR is the female Anopheles Mosquito
How can Malaria be controlled:?
By treating the illness
Current treatment is a 3 day course using a single multi-drug pill that includes artemisia. This has cut the number of cases by half
By destroying the Mosquitoes
Using insecticide treated nets (ITNs)
Spraying With DDT
Since 2000 dwellings have been sprayed wit DDT at low levels> The number of malaria cases has decreased dramatically
Caused by an Protozoan(Animal like protists)
