the armistice of 11th November 1918- 'the eleventh hour of the eleventh dayday of the eleventh month' - ended the Great War. The first Remembrance Day were commemorative on 11th November 1919.
Two features of that first commemoration are central to today's celebration:
-the Cenotaph in Whitehall was the place around which people united;
-the two-minutes silence. On King George's initiative people were asked to cease all activity and remain silent.
