The Time Machine
Analyzes the possible outcomes of Capitalism and Communism. Communism is described as a system that brings peace, but the lack of conflict will cause humans to devolve. Capitalism is portrayed unfavorably as a system that divides people until they destroy each other.
-
Humanity evolves into two distinct species, the Eloi and the Morlocks. Evolution is portrayed as a negative: both species of human have degenerated, the Eloi becoming physically and mentally weak and the Morlocks becoming morally bankrupt pseudo-cannibals. The evolution of humanity is harmful.

Never Let Me Go
The story is told through Kathy's memories. The reader can infer that Kathy's perception of her life is not accurate; she was fed misinformation and she willfully ignored the unpleasant aspects of her life. Her memories also don't match Ruth's recollection. This book demonstrates the imperfection of memory.
-
The clones are asked to create art to prove they have souls. Art is treated as something that emerges from the soul, whatever that may be, and not purely from the brain.
-
The clones are treated as separate entities. Even the guardians, who wish to improve the clones' lives, are uncomfortable in their presence.
-
Station Eleven
The Symphony performs because they believe art and beauty are necessary for a fulfilling life.
All art forms, from music to acting to graphic novels, are treated as equally beautiful.
-
The novel examines many different plot threads. All of the characters are shown to be connected, primarily through Arthur, but also through subtle means. Modern technology facilitates a density of connections: the world is much smaller because of air travel and telephones.
-
Kindred
The violence that white people perpetrate against black people is central to this book. The violence is portrayed with disgust and used to indict the systemic racism that supported such violence.
-
There are distinctions between classes of characters in this book. The most obvious is the difference between masters and slave; slaves are robbed of their rights as human beings. Dana is an outsider in this time period; slaves like Alice treat her differently because she is obviously better educated. Even among the oppressed, Dana is "other."

Short Stories/Poems
Story of Your Life
Language shapes and is shaped by our perception of the world. Heptapod B emerges as a reflection of the consciousness of the Heptapods; learning that language changes Louise's consciousness.
-
The Heptapods have a simultaneous view of time: they see all events as happening at once. Louise derives peace from the Heptapod perspective; with a simultaneous view, she sees the purpose behind events.

Inventory
The disease spreads by human contact. A CDC officer is initially annoyed that people can't stay apart, however, the story shows that human contact is integral to our lives. The narrator organizes her life around sequel encounters; being close to others defines her life and, in a sense, gives purpose to her life.

Battlestar Galactica, Season 3: Torn
-
The Cylon base ship functions as one large ecosystem: the hybrid controls the ship's functions and any Cylon can tap into the ship's "data stream." This connectivity contributes to their unified, democratic society.
-
Hera, the child of human and Cylon, is treated as the savior of both species. Evolution is necessary for survival; in order for the humans and Cylons to survive longterm, they must change. In this case, they change by unifying their species.
-
The Hybrid is the cyborg that controls the base ship while spouting an apparently nonsensical string of words. However, some Cylons believe that every word the Hybrid speaks is meaningful and that God speaks through the Hybrid. The Hybrid blurs the line between science and religion: she is the personification of technology, and yet she is also treated as a religious prophet.
-
The Cylons are intent on destroying humanity, their former masters. The Cylons have advanced, developing a unique psychology and system of governance, and their independence has allowed them to turn on humanity.

Movies
Blade Runner 2049
The replicant named "K" is shown to have some memories which are artificial and some that were copied from real people. If some of your memories are artificial and some of them are from other people, who really are you? Are you the person who actually lived those memories?
-
One of the replicants becomes the first to give birth. This is essential for the survival of their species; once they give birth, they are no longer dependent on humans to perpetuate their race. Their evolution sets them free.
-
The first replicant-born child takes on a savior-like quality. It is called a "miracle," which bring to mind parallels to a virgin-birth. The child is treated with religious reverence by other replicants. She is a symbolic savior, the proof that replicants can survive on their own without humanity
-
Blade Runner
The Replicants are mowed down in the street and given deliberately short lifespans. They are treated as slave labor without human dignity.
-
Roy Batty, while dying, laments that his memories will be lost forever. The memories are treated as something beautiful and precious
-
The buildings of the Tyrell Corporation are shaped like pyramids which rise high above the surrounding buildings. The height and shape suggests a religious significance akin to the pyramids of ancient Egypt. The Corporation's advances in science have reached mystical proportions: they can create life, a power associated with divine beings. It is fitting that the Corporation's buildings should resemble temples.
-
The Replicants are demonstrably dangerous. Roy Batty and his associates kill several individuals over the course of the movie and the police force is sufficiently afraid to kill them on sight. The replicants are useful laborers so long as they are controlled. Humans are terrified of autonomous androids.
-
The movie heavily implies that the environment of Earth has been irreparably harmed. Most of the population wishes to go off-world, and the only scenery is of a smog-filled, expansive city. If we continue on our path, the movie suggests, this will be the result.
-
Arrival
The human governments become secretive when the Heptapods mention a weapon, each nation worried about its own best interests. The fractious relationships almost cause a war. The movie critiques the way countries resist sharing information and look after only themselves at the expense of humanity in general.
