Influence of genes in friendship
Theory
Homophily
Correlation may be influenced by geography and ancestry
Friendship retention may be influence by genotype
Environment can play a role
Third party may influence friendships
Heterophily
Environments may foster friendships among different genotypes
People may actively seek out different phenotype friendships.
Methods
Data from Framing Hearts Study analyzed for SNP's in 1,932 subjects.
Avoid ancestral errors
Only 907 pairs were used with kinship below or equal to 0.
Stranger pair restricted to kinship less than or equal to 0
assessments
Homophily- Kinshp coefficient was calculated
Heterophily- empirical probability of opposing genotypes among SNP's compared to proportion of SNP's without either allele similarity.
Results
Friendships comparative to fourth cousins (p-2x10^-16)
Friends have fewer opposing SNP's (p=4x10^-9)
Conclusion
Olfactory senses appear to play a role in frienships
Linoleic acid may affect friendships (used as a pheromone in moths).
Genes affecting immune system did not appear to influence selection (possibly seeking different immune genes in incorporate into future offspring)
