Respiratory anatomy
Nasal cavity
The cavity on either side of the nasal septum, extending from the nares to the pharynx, and lying between the floor of the cranium and the roof of the mouth.
Trachea
the tube in humans and other air-breathing vertebrates extending from the larynx to the bronchi, serving as the principal passage for conveying air to and from the lungs; the windpipe.
Larynx
the hollow muscular organ forming an air passage to the lungs and holding the vocal cords in humans and other mammals; the voice box.
Alveolar duct
e tiny ducts that connect the respiratory bronchioles to alveolar sacs, each of which contains a collection of alveoli
Nasopharynx
the upper part of the pharynx, connecting with the nasal cavity above the soft palate.
Oropharynx
the part of the pharynx that lies between the soft palate and the hyoid bone.
Laryngopharynx
where both food and air pass. It can be found between the hyoid bone and the larynx and esophagus, which helps guide food and air where to go.

Ch 22.1
The internal nasal cavity lies in and posterior to the external nose. During breathing, air enters the cavity by passing through the nostrils or nares
The roof of the nasal cavity is formed by the ethmoid and sphenoid bones of the skull.
Anteriorly, where the palate is supported by the palatine bones and processes of the maxillary bones, it is called the hard palate. The unsupported posterior portion is the muscular soft palate.
Seromucous nasal glands contain mucus-secreting mucous cells and serous cells that secrete a watery fluid containing enzymes.
The nasopharynx is posterior to the nasal cavity, inferior to the sphenoid bone, and superior to the level of the soft palate
The oropharynx lies posterior to the oral cavity and is continuous with it through an archway called the isthmus of the fauces
the laryngopharynx , serves as a passageway for food and air and is lined with a stratified squamous epithelium.
Ch 22.2
The respiratory zone, the actual site of gas exchange, is composed of the respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, and alveoli, all microscopic structures.
The conducting zone consists of all of the respiratory passageways from the nose to the respiratory bronchioles. These provide fairly rigid conduits for air to reach the gas exchange sites.
