The Respiratory System Cierra Aanerud period 1
MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
ANATOMY OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT
ORGANS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM AND LOCATION
pharynx
located right behind the nose and mouth
larynx
located in the throat
oral cavity
located in the mouth
trachea
located right below the larynx and divides into the left and right bronchus
Main (primary) bronchus
(left&right) located right in between the lungs, connect into the lungs
Lungs
(left&right) located inside the thoracic cavity on the right and left side
nostril
part of the nose; 2 openings/holes
nasal cavity
located inside the nose
Diaphragm
located in the thoracic cavity at the very bottom right below the lungs
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE RIGHT AND LEFT LUNG
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE RIGHT AND LEFT PRIMARY BRONCHI
the right bronchus is wider, shorter and more vertical
BREATHING MECHANISM (PHYSIOLOGY)
DEFINITIONS OF LUNG CAPACITY TERMINOLOGY
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RESPIRATION
DISORDERS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
lung condition that can develop after severe illness or injury. Neutrophils leave the body’s capillaries in large numbers and then secrete chemicals that increase capillary permeability. As the lungs fill with fluid, the patient suffocates.
Cheyne-Stokes breathing
Abnormal breathing pattern which consists of bursts of tidal volume breaths (increasing and then decreasing in depth) alternating with periods of apnea.
Orthopnea
condition in which one can't breathe in a horizontal position
Pneumonia
Infectious inflammation of the lungs, in which fluid accumulates in the alveoli
Pulmonary embolism
Obstruction of the pulmonary artery or one of its branches by an embolus
