BREAST CARE
WHAT IS BREAST CARE?
- both mammograms and self exams should be a part of a woman's self care routine
- insurance plans governed by FACA (Federal Advisory Committee Act) must cover mammograms
- 2nd most common cancer in women, after skin
- women over the age over the age of 40 should receive a mammogram every two years
- 1 in 1,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer
GENETICS
- BRCA 2 tumors are estrogen and progesterone positive
- BRCA1 tumors are estrogen and progesterone receptor negative
- the BRCA gene, is a mutation that has been proven to be the link to breast cancer
MAMMOGRAPHY CONTROVERSY
- increasing evidence of the dangers of exposure the radiation
- cancerous lesions are usually seen before felt, proving importance of the mammogram
- proven to reduce breast cancer mortality
- the age of screening is controversial... under 40? 50? over 50?
- mammograms are known to underestimate the extent of lobular carcinoma about 25 percent of the time
ROLE OF MRI

- best option for monitoring recurring breast cancer
- can also help to guide a biopsy
- long procedure (usually over an hour)

- expensive ... not commonly done ... last source of testing
- contraindicated for people with metal objects, claustrophobia
ROLE OF ULTRASOUND
- no radiation = can use frequently for monitoring

- sensitive to distinguishing solid from fluid masses
- detect more invasive cancers than mammography particularly in dense breast tissue
