Naming of Non carbonyl Functional Groups
Halocarbons
4- change ending of halogens by adding o
ch -> chloro
Br -> bromo
I -> iodo
F -> fluoro
example:
CH3-CH2-CH2-Br
3-bromo propane
3- use prefixes and numbers to find their position
2- follow alphabetical order in naming halogens
1- start numbering the parent chain in a way to give functional group the lowest number
Alcohol
4- name the parent chain according to the number of carbon
3- name any alkyl group and list its position
5- remove (e) and replace it by (-ol)
6- identify the location of (OH) group using numbers
2- give the (OH) group the lowest number
example:
OH-CH2-CH2-CH3
1-propanol
1- choose the longest chain
Ethers
4- if (R) is benzene ring it will be called phenyl
5- if the two R are the same write the name once
3- end the name with the word ether
example:
CH3-CH3-O-CH2-CH3
ethyl ether
2- write them according to alphabetical order
1- name the two groups attached to (o) as alkyl group
Amines
