Sociological Theories
what is a theory?
-
an attempt to describe or explain a phenomenon or set of linked phenomena,
-
non-scientific theories cannot be disproven, and often cover every aspect of life
-
-
-
General theories - theories that not only explain the world, but don't enable asking new questions
(Geoffrey Alexander - "the world is so complex and dynamic, that it can't be tested empirically")
-
Sociologists
-
Social Evolutionist - the world is constantly improving, society and the world needs to run itself, laissez-faire.
Functionalist: Society is a living organism, that every part of it serves as a function for it.
if society is uninterrupted, the "fit" humans who contribute to society will survive and breed. those who are not will become instinct and disappear
Both Comte and Marx described human history as a necessarily changing process towards a one-way "end of History"
