Over 14 million were affected. The worst affected area was Tacloban and was home to more than 220,000. Tacloban saw the most loss of life across the Philippines. In total, Approximately 7,400 people were killed, 550,000 peoples houses were completely destroyed and a further 580,000 were severely damaged. This left 6,000,000 displaced and 1,900,000 homeless. The fishing community was devastated with 30,000 boats and associated equipment destroyed. Major rice, corn and sugar-producing areas for the Philippines were left unusable by the storm surge meaning trouble for the Philippines' export business.
